 Origin: Zoola
 Phylum: Animal

Phylum: Animal

Class: Arthropod

Animals belonging to the Arthropod Class are cold-blooded creatures with an exo-skeleton, typically a chitinous substance. While it is not an absolute requirement, a common feature is having a segmented body. Additionally, arthropods often have specialized senses from antennas, multiple sets of eyes or organs that detect vibrations or scents.

Giant Ant

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

A four-foot long ant with slashing mandibles. Giant ants are colony creatures; however, there tend not to be numbers in the thousands as with their smaller versions. The population of a giant anthill can grow up to nearly one hundred before a new queen will be produced to split off and establish a new brood.

Upon any successful bite, the ant delivers a painful poison. This toxin does no damage, but if the victim fails a Resilience save (TM:7), then for following ten seconds the victim is at disadvantage for all attacks, saves and checks. The pain of the poison if ephemeral and does not add any additional Pain points to the victim.

Assassin Beetle

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

These are four-legged insectoids around 8 inches long. They offer no direct combat threat. However, they attempt to reproduce by implanting eggs into a living hominoid host while the victim is sleeping, crawling in through an open mouth. The sleeping victim is permitted an Awareness check effectively at TM:10 to notice the invasion. The adjusted TM factors both the state of sleeping and the sensation of contact being made. If awakening, the victim can easily expel the bug, If waking even up to a minute after entry (perhaps due to another waking the victim), then vomiting out the bug must be induced or can be self-enforced on a Will save (TM:10), but vomiting will leave the victim in a disadvantage state for the following five minutes.

Once swallowed during sleep, the victim is permitted a Resilience save (TM:11) as if this were poison, meaning dwarves are at advantage on the save. If failing, d6 new beetles grow for a duration over d4+4 days, at which point d2 points of Pain occur as the larva attempts to gnaw its way out of the host. At this point, 1 Body point of damage is inflicted per hour.

During the infestation of the new beetles attempting to get free of the host, no natural healing happens, but magical healing will work. The bugs keep eating until the host reaches Zero Body, where in the new insects emerge in an Alien-Movie fashion. Remove Disease will kill the larva. Also, if it cannot eat its way out within 12 hours, the bugs die and are passed from the host about 8 hours later. However, there is still no natural healing occurs until the bug has been passed. An assassin beetle is almost always a solitary creature — the exception might be if these insects are harvested and released in bulk by some villain against a group.

Carrion Beetle

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

Giant scavenger insect, which is mildly resistant to poison but also delivers a cumulative paralytic poison in its bite. Every time a victim is bitten by the carrion beetle, it must make a Resilience save (TM:12) or suffer the loss of one tier of movement for ten minutes. The poison effect can occur repeated on the same victim, and if failing the save while at an effective Black movement, then the victim falls into the Paralyzed restriction.

Giant Centipede

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

The giant centipede extends about four to five feet long. It has a corrosive bite with which it attacks on a single d20. If it scores a hit, then not only is the standard damage inflicted but further, the bitten must make a Resilience save (TM:9). If failing the save, then an additional d4 corrosive acid burns the victim. Further, at the start of each consecutive turn for the victim (applied before holding an action), the save must be rolled again until it is successfully made. For each failure, d4 points of corrosive damage is inflicted. Unless discovering a mating ball, these are encountered singletons.

Eintykára

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

The Eintykára sting-less bees produce a golden honey. This honey can induce mild hallucinogenic effects, due to the presence of an ergot fungus on the plants the bees visit. But even more remarkable is their ability to swarm together a man shape which can act as an individual. The stats for this creature are for the manlike swarm rather than the individual bee. In the man-shape, the bees can produce a minor hallucinogenic illusion. When approaching another being, that person must roll an Awareness check (TM:10) or be under the impression the swarm is an actual person, who is speaking desirable promises — not quite as restrictive as if being under a charm, but similar. However, if the swarm is threatened, it can pick up weapons or strike with its “fists.”

Moth-hopper

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

In certain areas, there have developed some atypical ecological niches, such as the grassland plains of the Occiduus continent, where the skies are a zone of many flying creatures. Because of that, some odd diversity of fliers has developed there. One of those peculiar species is the Moth-hopper. While not an exciting encounter, these pests are quite aesthetic for those who have never seen them. They are voracious insects, eating much of the vegetation of the tropics, but also the swarms cross pollinate several plants. However, as a hazard, these gorgeous vermin carry several diseases which can be transferred to those foreign to the area. As an entry in the bestiary, the monster is represented as a swarm of these insects. A group of a "swarm" takes up a huge volume and obscures the vision of those within the space to inflict a -2 upon all the victims to hit attacks. Also, as an encounter, the swarm(s) will likely eat the travelers food; one swarm can eat one day's worth of food in one minute. Finally, the throng of insects are susceptible to fire, but anyone enveloped by the swarm will suffer half the base of the original damage.

Giant Scorpion

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

Giant scorpions are roughly 12 feet long head to stinger. They attack with a front pincher to grasp its victim. A successful pincher attack acts like a cleaver against one's Defense, which further enters the scorpion into an immediate grappling competition with its prey. If held upon its next attack, then subsequent rounds, the scorpion will use its stinger. On a successful strike with the stinger, no physical body damage occurs but rather a powerful neurotoxin reduces d6 Mind points. There is no poison restriction - just the loss of Mind points. Once the victim reaches zero Mind, he or she passes out for an hour, during which (if not rescued by others) will be devoured by the giant arthropod. Outside the nest, no more than four scorpions will travel together.

Banana Spider

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

These spiders are technically giant but definitely smaller than the classic giant spider, so much so they are in the SMALL size classification. They are only about 18-inches in diameter including the legs, meaning their bodies are a mere 6 to 8 inches, which is still a frightening arachnid, being as spry and vicious as a chihuahua toy dog. Unlike the classic giant spider, this version has a simple poison that inflicts the restriction for around 20 minutes; however, their fangs deliver a deep piercing wounding, making a nest of them a potential threat.

Giant Stinger-Tail Spider

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

Giant stinger-tailed spider is a strange arthropod as it often fools victims that it will attack with its stinger; however, only its bite inflicts damage. The tail may flail around during combat, but it doesn't impose any true threat and is not venomous. The spider's bite, however, is —— with a neurotoxin similar to that of a giant scorpion. The bite inflicts both Body damage as well as Mind damage if failing the Will save (TM:9).

Giant Wasp

 Zoola  Animal  Arthropod

A giant wasp has an 18-inch-long body and about a three-foot wingspan. Despite its small size, these over-sized insects are quite hardy. Its stinger attack is extremely painful and causes the victim to be wracked in pain. This doesn't add Pain values, but is represented by the brief poison effect. When struck, the victim must roll a Resilience save against a TM:15; if failing, the stung being is under the Poisoned restriction until the end of the victim’s next turn. Encountered wasps should be only one or two, unless near their nest in which perhaps thirty may live.
