 Enchanted Bestiary
 Origin: Zoola
 Phylum: Animal

Phylum: Animal

Class: Avian

The Avian Class that is primarily bird-like animals with strong but light skeletons. They are endothermic (warm-blooded) and lay eggs. Most are natural flyers and have feathers, but flight is not a requirement for the class. There are what appear as hybrids, the hippogryph for example; however, creatures in the animal phylum are natural beings and not magically modified.

Blood Raptor

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

The blood raptor is sometimes referred to as the shark of the air, as these birds smell blood up to two miles away. Unlike other birds of prey, what makes these creatures dangerous is that they hunt and attack as a flock with groups between three to ten (d8+2) being the norm. As a pack, they gain bonuses to attack as if having the swarming skill, but they do not have to be adjacent but rather gain the attack bonus value when that number of the pack coordinate their attacks against the same opponent using a fly-by method. Depending on the size of the flock, they may split to gain the bonuses against two targets. Further, their blood frenzy allows the raptors to inflict extra damage (+2) against victims who that bird has already wounded in the current encounter.

Note: A fly-by attack allows the raptor to attack an opponent within a 15-feet reach on its turn so long as the bird has not flown past the target and that its next movement it must pass through an adjacent hex of the target, whether striking successfully or not. Further, as the name implies, it can only be used if the raptor is in flight. It also makes the bird susceptible to the Impalement reaction, which would occur simultaneously with its attack.

Eagle

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

Among the most majestic of raptors, these predatory birds pluck fish from streams and lakes, drop down on rodents and small mammals in alpine meadows, and have even been known to pull young mountain goats from the assumed safety of their cliffs. These creatures have powerful clawed talons and sharp, hooked beaks perfect for tearing flesh. Their enhanced eyesight allows them to spot prey from great distances, and they typically hunt in wide circling patterns high above the ground.

Giant Eagle

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

The giant form of the eagle stands about 10 feet tall, with a torso around the size of a pony. These majestic birds have wingspans up to 30 feet, and resembles its smaller cousins in nearly every way except size. A giant eagle weighs 500 pounds. However, they are far more developed than just their larger form. They possess a supernatural intellect and view themselves as guardians and protectors of their mountain territories. While they do not possess the power of speech, they are empathetic communicators, form relationships and understand social behavior at nearly human comprehension.

TRAITS

Falcon

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

These birds represent a trained one with falconry. What makes the trained falcon dangerous is not the amount of damage that it inflicts but rather the placement of its attack. These avians have powerful clawed talons and sharp, hooked beaks which will tear flesh. However, when successfully striking an opponent, the victim must roll an Agility save (TM:10). Failing the save indicates the falcon has struck in the head near the eyes, which will lead the victim temporarily blinded for (2d4 × 10) seconds. Worse, if the victim rolls a “natural 1” on the save, then the blindness may become permanent, with the victim suffering a minimum of 24 hours of blindness. In this case, the victim rolls a Resilience save (TM:12) for each 24-hour period, requiring two successful saves before vision is restored. If unable to roll two saves within five days, the blindness becomes permanent.

Obviously, creatures not using eyes to see would not be affected. However, a sighted victim might be struck in the eyes multiple times during an encounter, making the falconry a serious form of attack.

Hippogryph

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

Hippogryphs are pony-sized beasts with an equine backend with the head and talons of a giant eagle. These omnivores are fierce fighters and nest in craggy regions. They are actually birds, not mammal, and lay eggs to reproduce. These predators often prey on pigs, goats and other livestock, but have been known to attack people. Also, their attack style is to use a group between two and four to overpower singular opponents, but often break off an attack if outnumbered. However, it caught on the ground, a hippogryph can make a multi-target attack if there is an opponent in the rear using a bucking kick. While they can fly in quick spurts, hippogryphs do not have a great endurance and thus, tend not to fly far from their nests. There has not been a known case of a tamed hippogyrph.

Osprider

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

Ospriders are flightless steeds for lighter races, such as halflings, gnomes, elves or light humans. Despite their eight-foot stature, they do not have the strength of horses and cannot be used as beasts of burden. However, the ospriders are excellent mounts for treacherous terrain. They ignore flat difficult terrain, and they can climb sheer edges of 75 degrees at a moment rate of 40 feet without requiring any checks. However, they cannot climb perfectly smooth surfaces greater than 30 degrees. Because of their builds, ospriders can only support a rider of 150 pounds or less. Additionally, they become ineffective mounts if placed in barding. However, they can be trained to be war mounts who can attack with wearing the armor. However, most domestic ospriders are used as a social status and often highly decorated for appearance. Owning just one might increase one's monthly maintenance by 50 bits if contending among the upper class or nobility.

Owl

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

Owls are birds known for silent movements, keen eyesight, excellent hearing, and an often mythical wisdom. They are nocturnal creatures that largely hunt smaller creatures, like small mammals or lizards. They are also keen predators who have been known use strategy like picking embers from behind night fires and dropping them to steer their prey.

Strix

 Zoola  Animal  Avian

Often mistaken for a magogen creature, the strix is merely a rare animal species, avian even. These bird-headed bat-like creatures have 18-inch wingspans and have a long proboscis by which they drain their victims of blood. On a successful hit, a strix does not inflict immediate damage but will remain attached, drawing blood. After a successful hit, each following action for the strix will automatically inflict 1 Body point of damage from draining. After 2 actions of draining, the strix will use the following action to detach then fly away on the next movement opportunity. When a strix is attached and draining, a hominoid victim can use an action to remove one, but an Agility competition is required to hold and kill it, which is automatic if winning the competition; otherwise, it flies free when removed. If striking an attached strix, it assumes the Defense of its prey (assuming the prey is higher) and like damage will be conveyed to the victim. Strix are nocturnal and attack in swarms of six to ten.

Variants
BoastrixThis cousin has a tail around 18 to 24 inches which also wraps around its victim on a successful attack. It an action as a successful grappling escape, then a second action to dislodge the boastrix. Of course a 1-point self-inflicting action against the attached is also an option to end the threat in only one-action.
PlaguestrixThis breed carries disease. On attachment, the GM will roll a Resilience save (TM:14) for a minor infection.
RazorstrixThis subspecies has a serrated proboscis that tears an additional point of body damage upon its removal, including when it self-withdraws.
ScreamstrixThis strain appears in numbers less than four, but its screech can inflict 1 point of Spirit to any within 15 feet of it when using its sonic attack on its turn. Victims are allowed a Will save (TM:12) to avoid the effect.
