This multi-headed reptilian monster can be found in marshes, swamps, and subterranean lairs. It gains 1d20 attack per head, typically no more than five. However, each head can attack a separate target and act as multiple attacks even if striking the same one. Further, the base 37 body points does not include the body damage to be taken to the creature's heads. For each head of the hydra, an additional 7 points is added to the total body max; thus, a five-headed hydra has a total of 72 body points. As specific hits are not part of the system, striking specific heads is not a valid action and would be difficult to ensure anyway; however, as part of the encounter, when the hydra drops below 20 total body points, then one of its head stops functioning. A second head stops at 10 points or lower. If having only two heads, the beast is still alive, but unable to attack. Hydras with greater number of heads will continue to fight until dropped to zero. Attacks in the stat block are listed as a single head.
There are variants of this beast: pyro-hydra, cryo-hydra and necro-hydra, which per hit will deliver either 1 extra point of fire, cold or necrotic damage.
