Long believed to be related to the fiend kingdom, this rare breed actually began as demi-dragon. Sages believe that either a sorcerer, master horse-breeder, or both was able to preserve the bloodline by breeding the original with draft horses. The resulting nightmare breed has an innate resistance to fire. While the history is unclear, nightmares are no longer considered domesticated, but with several skills and magic there have been known cases of some using one as a mount. When this occurs, the mount is considered to be war-trained, meaning if its rider is skilled with war-steed, the mount can take separate attacks from its rider but on his turn. Additionally, the nightmare’s resistance to fire is mystically conveyed to the rider. Generally, this species is wild and rare, however. The nightmare horse is a bit larger than the normal horse, standing 20 to 22 hands tall (7 feet), is covered with black scales, and its breath emits fire-like steam from its nostrils. Their luminescent orange manes are often mistaken for flames, as they radiate a dim glow for 10 feet. If they are in the wild, nightmares tend to travel in small herds no larger than eight.
